Beyond Barriers recently welcomed young people, parents and carers, educators, businesses and community members to showcase our new provision in Redditch for young people aged 16–24.
We provide specialist alternative provision for young people facing barriers to their next steps, including those with special educational needs (SEN), social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH), and those at risk of becoming NEET (not in education, employment or training). Through academic and vocational qualifications at the learner’s pace, personalised mentoring, life skills development, job coaching, careers guidance and hands-on work experience, we build confidence, independence and sustainable futures.
Our open day enabled families to explore the venue, understand our approach and discuss support options. We welcomed local high schools, colleges, businesses and organisations to explore referrals and partnerships, including work experience, placements, mentoring and careers talks.
Conversations highlighted a clear need to tackle NEET figures and improve transitions from secondary education into further learning and employment. For young people who struggle with mainstream college or apprenticeships, there is often little middle ground. Specialist, flexible support is essential to prevent young people from falling through the cracks. We gathered testimonials from young people and listened to their stories. One young person commented: “There is such a variety of support on offer – different opportunities, flexible, and they adapt to what I need.”
Beyond Barriers opens its doors this October, looking forward to strengthening local partnerships and helping more young people overcome barriers, recognise their potential and build positive futures.
