Birmingham City University degree apprentice, Poppy Deakin, has been shortlisted for FE/HE Student of the Year at the UK Building The Future Awards 2026.
Entering the final year of her Construction Site Management degree apprenticeship at BCU, Poppy combines academic excellence with a successful career as an Assistant Project Manager at Overbury. Based at Overbury Central, she helps deliver high-quality office fit-out projects across the Midlands, coordinating contractors, managing project sequencing and supporting health and safety compliance on site.
Reflecting on the recognition, Poppy said: “I am very grateful to be shortlisted for this award, which recognises both my passion for the construction industry and the commitment I have demonstrated throughout my university studies. As I enter my final year, I look forward to continuing to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical experience, applying academic learning to real-world project delivery on site.”
Poppy was nominated by Dr Ilnaz Ashayeri, Academic Lead for Student Experience and STEAM at BCU, who praised her commitment, leadership and ability to apply learning in the workplace.
Dr Ashayeri said: “Poppy consistently demonstrates enthusiasm for learning, professional development and academic achievement. She is a determined and highly capable student who effectively connects academic study with practical workplace experience, making her a deserving nominee for this award.”
The winners will be announced at the UK Building The Future Awards 2026 on 5 November.
