With social media full of dramatic before-and-after photographs, it can be difficult to tell if the person offering advice is also trying to sell you something. As a Consultant Ophthalmic Plastic, Cancer Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgeon, Dr Julia Sen believes the starting point should be the concern you want to address, rather than a procedure you have seen advertised online.
“Someone asking for filler may actually be concerned about skin quality or facial descent,” explains Dr Sen, Director of Worcester-based Dr Julia Sen Health & Wellness Clinic. “And sometimes a non-surgical treatment won’t produce the result you want, so a thorough consultation is essential to consider the face as a whole, alongside medical history, expectations, risks and recovery. I always advise checking a practitioner’s qualifications and experience, asking how often they perform the procedure and finding out what aftercare is provided.”
These were among the issues discussed at Dr Sen’s recent Curious About Aesthetics? event at Stanbrook Abbey Hotel. She was joined by Alice Mackintosh, Nutritionist and co-founder of EquiLondon, who shared advice about dietary supplementation for women in midlife. Other topics on the night including facial ageing, skincare, anti-ageing treatments and the clinic’s new Quantum10 FaceTite.
“Good aesthetic medicine isn’t about persuading someone to have more done,” says Dr Sen. “It means giving them honest, evidence-based information so they can make a safe and informed choice.”
