Does your team have a go-to person who solves everyone’s tech problems? Tim Price of Train IT Midlands says that’s often the clearest sign a business needs proper training.
Tim told host Adam Hanslow-Smith that the right time to invest is “when you can see people are wasting time and duplicating effort, or they rely on that one highly-skilled person.” The cost runs both ways: colleagues lose time waiting for help, while the expert loses time solving everyone else’s problems – often without passing on the knowledge, so the same questions persist.
Tim’s own training career began by chance, teaching Outlook and Excel to a community group at Age Concern. “It gave me so much patience,” he says. The experience taught him to drop technical language and explain things in terms people relate to – such as showing attendees how to email photos to family overseas. “Because you were talking about something useful for them, they pay attention.”
Delivering online workshops also demands more preparation than most expect. Tim runs three screens for delivery, one showing exactly what delegates see, with a backup computer in case of failure. “It’s almost like a live broadcast setup,” Adam observed.
