The Mayor of Worcester has congratulated the Worcester Wolves Basketball team, after being crowned National League One Pool A Champions.
The squad, made up of University of Worcester students, paid a special visit to the Mayor’s Parlour at the Guildhall where Mayor of Worcester, Cllr Dr Matthew Lamb, welcomed them to hear about their recent success.
“It’s always wonderful to meet students and celebrate their sporting success,” said Dr Lamb. “Worcester Wolves have done incredibly well in such a competitive league. It’s a tribute to their hard work and dedication that they did so well, and it has been great to chat to them today.”
He added: “Worcester has a very rich sporting heritage, including rugby, cricket and football, and we can add these basketballers to the pantheon of sporting heroes who have represented our city so well.”
Wolves centre Christian Rufus-Shaba said: “It feels really great to be here. I feel a sense of achievement because I never expected to get to this place with my basketball, so it is a blessing.”
The first-year Mental Health Nursing student added: “I chose to study at Worcester out of all of my choices because I wanted to balance my education with my basketball. Both are really important to me, and both are at a really high standard here.”
Head Coach Dean Blake said the success the side had this season is a reason for the whole city to celebrate: “It’s so great to come here and be recognised, not only by the University, but also by the city.”
He added: “Worcester Wolves can now officially say we’re one of the very top teams in the country, and we play right here in Worcester, so if you haven’t already come to see us play, come and do so!”
