What is this course about?

Since the UK left the Customs Union of the EU in January 2021, the number of import customs entries have increased but it is from the 1st January 2022 that all arrivals from the EU must be declared to customs on arrival into the UK as the delayed declaration easement comes to an end.

This session will review what information is needed to ensure an accurate and compliance customs entry is submitted with emphasis on understanding when a zero-duty and/or VAT rate may apply.  How to manage your payments of customs duty and your company import VAT liability, now potentially covered by Postponed VAT Accounting rules (PVA).

Key areas covered:

Key information required on a customs entry and the link to custom and VAT calculations

Valuing goods and why it isn’t just goods you are buying that could require payment of duty/VAT

Methods of paying duty and VAT including the Duty Deferment Account (DDA) and obtain a DDA waiver

How to claim a zero customs duty under free trade agreements (preference) or quotas

When might we have to pay more duty, eg Anti-dumping and Trade Remedy Measures

VAT – using the agent, paying on arrival or using PVA

Understanding the C79 and MPIV VAT Certificates

Who should attend?

Everyone who has any connection with sales or purchases and the international supply chain. This seminar will remove misunderstanding and shine a light on which terms are better for your individual business needs.

The following are examples of the type of company personnel who need to keep up-to-date:

Newcomers to import or people only involved occasionally with imports

Shipping department trainees

Import administrators and managers who have had no formal training

Buyers, purchasing and procurement staff who need to understand key issues to correctly obtain prices and understand the true “cost of ownership”

Freight forwarders and clearing agents who may be asked by their clients to make this important legal decision when entering goods to customs

Management trainees
