Over the last few years, Social Media has grown from being used recreationally by the public into one of the most powerful digital marketing tools in business.

It has proven to be a very cost-effective and successful way to boost brand awareness and building an online persona by posting frequently, keeping your audience up to date with new products or office/business related posts. However, many brands have come to learn what advantages and disadvantages there are to social media and what platforms should work for them.

Let’s look at the advantages first, as I mentioned earlier social media can be very cost effective; most social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are free. You can create your business profile and post updates and gain a large company following with little expense. Some companies improve their content performance and reach a wider audience by using Pay-Per-Click and expert agencies to target their posts more specifically. One of the most important advantages is that you get to build customer relationships daily which can lead to further loyalty to the brand.

Now let’s consider why social media can be a disadvantage for a business… it can be very time consuming and takes a while to build and hold an online presence. In fact, 58% of social media marketers are using and developing their profiles for over 11 hours a week! Social Media also opens a company up to backlash they may not have faced before; an incorrectly worded post or badly thought out campaign can impact negatively on the perception of the company to a much larger audience. Unfortunately, social media can also be prone to security breaches and the potential for information such as customers’ details to be stolen.

Many businesses are jumping on the social media bandwagon, many of which are not even properly assessing the effective impact of using social media. As we have discovered, you must take into account all of the positive and negative aspects and make sure you’re planning in advance what goals and outcomes you want to achieve.
