Foregate Street, Worcester A historic place to do business!

The name Foregate Street is very familiar to Worcester’s business community & gives a direct link to the city’s medieval history. The Foregate was one of the main entry points into the old walled city & today’s Foregate Street was an area outside the city walls packed with rough dwellings.

Things changed in the 1700s when the Georgians cleared away the hovels and built elegant and spacious homes for the well-to-do wanting to escape from the overcrowded city centre. One of these lovely homes, now known as Kingsway House Business Centre, has stood on this main thoroughfare for over 300 years.

In 1802 Foregate Street was described as “a fashionable promenade” and one of the best in Europe!  The area developed under the Victorians with the building of the Shire Hall, the library & the railway station and after 1880 horse-drawn trams were a common sight.

As the character of the street changed, so did the use of the buildings. In the 20th century number 40 was at times a gentlemen’s club and an English language centre. Now it is a business centre retaining its original Georgian elegance and style but with the latest in modern facilities and comfort.
