Eight science students from Worcester Sixth Form College attended the Educating Engineers Scheme Celebration and Assessment Day on 2nd May at Cranmore Park, Solihull.

The event was the culmination of a lot of dedication and hard work on projects which have been developed over the course of this academic year. The students, who split into two teams, presented their prototypes to a panel of Senior Engineers and other participants and were commended on the complexity of their projects and how much they had achieved.
The students have been working alongside engineers from QinetiQ, a Malvern based engineering company, on two projects. One team developed a Synthetic Aperture Radar that can produce 2D images and also designed a rig to move the radar and waterproof the radar's surround. The students persevered and work together to solve any problems that they encountered on the way.
The other team designed a directional sound system which prevents sound waves from being spread out and produces a very narrow beam of sound which can only be heard directly in front of the speaker. They also designed a motorised enclosure for the speaker so that it the beam of sound from the speaker could be aimed at different targets. 
The students were given roles replicating roles they might have when working on an engineering project in industry and included project managers, electrical engineers, software engineers and mechanical engineers. All of those involved agreed that the Scheme had provided them with an invaluable experience of what it is like to be an engineer working on a complex project. Daniel Vizard-Williams, a first year student, said: "I have found that taking part in the EES programme has been highly beneficial, it has given me a good insight into what life as an engineer would be like, and has confirmed the career I want to work towards."
Edd Franklin, Subject Leader for Physics at Worcester Sixth Form College, said: "I am extremely proud of our students. They have worked very hard on their projects all year and have never given up, even when things weren't going to plan. They have achieved a great deal in a relatively short period of time and hopefully the experience has encouraged them to pursue a STEM based career."
