WORCESTER SIXTH FORM COLLEGE STUDENT WINS GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIP

Date: 17/05/2017

Congratulations to Eirini Barbu, a first year student at Worcester Sixth Form College, who won the North West Open Gymnastics Championship in Wigan at the end of April.

Eirini, who is currently studying AS levels in Classical Civilisation, Physical Education, Travel and Tourism and Italian GCSE, moved to the UK two years ago from Greece and trains with Worcester’s Rhythmic Gymnastics Club. Her passion for Rhythmic Gymnastics started at the age of 5 when she would attend training sessions with her mother who was a coach. With dedication and a tremendous amount of hard work, Eirini competed in the Greek National Competition in 2009 and finished sixth.

Moving to Worcester offered Eirini new opportunities including achieving the Level 1 Coaching Certificate which has enabled her to teach skills to young children. She also dedicates ten hours a week to her own training and this paid off with her recent success at the Open Championships.

When talking about her success, Eirini said: “Whenever I compete I always give my all and when I am on top of the podium and see a big smile and tears of pride on my mother's face, it makes the hard work worth it.” She adds: “My dream for the future is to keep working with young children as a gymnastics coach in order to let them develop the skills and grace required to be successful in gymnastics.”
