With the Wheelchair Basketball European Championships coming to the University Arena and a newly promoted Worcestershire County Cricket Club celebrating its 150th year, sporting spectaculars are never too far away for local sport afficionados. But what better way to celebrate than by honouring those who are achieving great things across the community?
The chance to do so is on Tuesday 4th November, when the annual Sports Awards are to be held at Sixways, the home of the Worcester Warriors rugby team.
The Awards, organised by Sports Partnership Herefordshire & Worcestershire, who work with Sport England, amongst other groups, such as local authorities, national sporting governing bodies, and local clubs, give the chance to celebrate the sporting achievements of individuals and teams alike, from across the two counties.
Sports Partnership have strong principles of promoting sport, physical activity and, above all, a healthy lifestyle, and their awards follow the same mantra. Individual awards range from Community Project of the Year - sponsored by the Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce - through to the illustrious Sports Personality of the Year, which is to be decided by a public vote.
The event is not just an opportunity to celebrate the sporting excellence of teams and individuals, but a chance for the many coaches and volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes, organising matches, running training sessions come rain or shine, and taking the time to help others sporting development - all alongside day to day careers.
The Sports Awards are not just a chance to acknowledge sporting achievements, they are a testament to the positive impact engagement with sport can have, not just in helping to create a healthy lifestyle, but in personal development and community building.
Commenting on the Awards, Mike Ashton, Chief Executive of the Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce, said: "It is an absolute privilege to sponsor an award at the 2014 Sports Awards. Sport is a really useful tool to help promote positive attitudes in people of all ages, promoting teamwork, determination and personal development, and being able to champion some of our most gifted and hardworking teams and individuals is a great way to encourage more people to get involved in sports at all levels.
