CAMPAIGNERS raising money to buy a state-of-the-art machine to treat prostate cancer came one step closer to reaching their £300,000 target.
The Rory the Robot Appeal set out 18 months ago to raise cash for the machine, which will allow surgeons to perform minimally invasive surgery, removing the prostate gland.
Prostate cancer survivor Brian Wilkes, from Droitwich, is leading the campaign with Ian Jukes and Paul Markall, and the team has raised around £220,000 - but tens of thousands more pounds are still needed before a down payment for the 'robot' can be made.
However, thanks to a fundraising day at Webbs of Wychbold £606.08 was added to the kitty, along with £198.64 raised at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.
Mr Wilkes, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2015, said: "The appeal in 18 months has raised £220,000 including the sum collected at the Webbs store. Once the £300,000 is achieved, the NHS will trigger the first down payment for the robotic surgical machine to be introduced into the urology department at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch for radical prostatectomy."
Attending the collection event at Webbs was Nick Baker, head of operations at the garden centre, and Andrea Borwell-Fox, president of the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce, who is supporting the appeal.
Bag packing events have been held at various Morrisons stores around Worcestershire this year, raising thousands for the appeal, while the supermarket giant has donated £25,000.
