PHOENIX STAFF IN NEED OF A VITAMIN BOOST THIS WINTER

Home / News & Opportunities / Member News

Date: 20/03/2017

Life and pension firm Phoenix Group joined forces with New Leaf Health to offer staff a Vitamin D test onsite;

; to help them review current levels of the ‘sunshine vitamin’ in their bodies, following the winter months. 53% of staff tested required a referral to their GP as their test results revealed ‘deficient’ levels of Vitamin D, lower than 30 nanomoles per litre (nmol/L).

26% of staff fell into the bracket of ‘insufficient’ which is expected at this time of the year, but can easily be managed with a supplement from their local pharmacy; and 21% achieved ‘adequate’ levels linked mainly to those recently returning from a winter-sun holiday or are already in receipt of booster supplements.

Queen Mary University of London released results of a study last month, revealing that Vitamin D supplements protect against acute respiratory infections including colds and flu.

The study provides the most robust evidence yet that Vitamin D has benefits beyond bone and muscle health. Phoenix Group offered this test for the first time to staff, through its focus on ‘health and wellbeing’ as research suggests a direct link between low levels of Vitamin D and increased cases of musculoskeletal and bone weakness in the UK during the winter months, and lower mental impairment.

 Lucy Symonds, Corporate Responsibility Manager, Phoenix Group commented: “I’m pleased that we were able to offer this test onsite for staff, making them aware of something that they may not have previously considered. We’re looking forward to following up with staff in the coming months to see if this intervention has boosted their wellbeing.

” Andy Lee-O’Neill, Health Check Advisor, New Leaf Health, said: “It’s great to have worked with Phoenix to develop this new onsite test for staff. We now have the knowledge and equipment to offer this service to other clients, to further improve the health of workers across the UK.”
