Redditch Golf Club has said “au revoir” rather than farewell to its head greenkeeper who logged 51 years’ service with the club before he retired this autumn.

But now Phil Thornton is already back at the club in his retirement and has undertaken to look after the garden areas surrounding the clubhouse.

He has also been made an honorary member of the club and was presented with a set of clubs by grateful members and club captain Phil Guise following a testimonial day held at the Lower Grinsty Lane club.

“To record 51 years in any job, let alone the same one, is pretty incredible these days and we owe a huge debt of gratitude to Phil for over five decades of hard work,” said Mr Guise.
His place as head greenkeeper has been taken by Karl Williams, who was the successful candidate from a huge number of applications.

He moves across from North Worcestershire Golf Club and according to club captain Phil Guise was the “stand out candidate”.

“We had 78 applications and we chose Karl purely on ability,” he said.
