One of Worcestershire’s leading housing associations is celebrating after being shortlisted in two categories at the UK’s top social housing finance awards.

Fortis Living – which provides more than 15,000 homes throughout Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire – attended the HANA – Housing Association National Accountancy – awards earlier this month where it received the accolades.
The event – which took place on Thursday 6 July in London – welcomed more than 400 social housing finance professionals to celebrate the sector’s finance achievements.
Fortis was highly commended in the Best Innovation in Financial Technology/Software category as well as being shortlisted in the Treasury Team of the Year – large organisation – category.
Andy Howarth, Executive Director of Finance at Fortis Living explained : “This is the first time we have entered the HANA awards and with 64 entries, competition was certainly stiff!  We are therefore delighted to have reached such a level in the categories we entered; it is testimony to our finance team’s hard work and confirms that we are performing with the very best in the sector to the benefit of our tenants.”
Organised by the National Housing Federation, the award judges were impressed by Fortis’ submission in the Best Innovation category; unlike many housing associations, Fortis does not use spreadsheets to report financial information, using instead budgeting and forecasting software which allows for senior managers and budget holders to achieve measurable improvements.
Entitled Collaborative Planning – or CP – the software ensures data is all in one place with access to information 24 hours a day.  With automatic forecasting calculation built in, CP has allowed for a time saving of around 50 per cent.  As confirmation, Fortis Living’s internal auditors awarded the organisation top marks for CP providing excellent internal controls.
Fortis decided to enter the Treasury Team category based on the implementation of a number of new processes which received the highest assurance rating from an internal audit.  Crucially, by accurately managing cash flows and driving down the cost of funds, this has meant Fortis has been able to build more new affordable homes than originally planned.
