For the second year running Herefordshire Health and Safety Group (HHSG) have won a Gold Award in the prestigious Alan Butler Awards run by the national organisation, Safety Groups UK.

The Group is one of 70 similar voluntary groups spread across the UK and run by volunteers to help raise awareness among local businesses of latest developments in workplace health and safety and to signpost SMEs particularly to find solutions.

Members of the Group’s organising committee received the award from SGUK president, Lord Jordan, at a presentation ceremony at the House of Lords on Monday 30th January.

HHSG is one of only four such groups to be awarded ‘Gold’ this year. The independent judging panel for the Award scheme found that it was a well-run group, striving to becoming the local ‘go to’ network for information and guidance in the County.

The Group’s programme includes a regular update from bodies like the Health and Safety Executive and also site visits.  Besides developing their communications with members, over the last year the Group has sought to extend their outreach via links with the local Chamber of Commerce and the Council and in October they ran a special one day event at the Herefordshire and Ludlow College on promoting the safety of young people - both at work and in other contexts such as driving and outdoor activities.

Phil Chandler and Trevor Smith, who are joint chairs of the Group, said, “We are delighted that our work here in the County to help make workplaces safer - and to tackle health risks at work - has been recognised again in this way. Membership of our group is open to all organisations. It only costs £30 a year and member businesses can send as many delegates as they like to our seminars. Giving people knowledge to get their health and safety arrangements right can not only help to save a life or prevent an injury, it can also help to contribute to overall business success. Good health and safety is good business ! ”
